Few places on earth offer the rich history and culture found in New Mexico.

That rich history and culture happened—and happens—in locations across the state. The Cultural Atlas of New Mexico brings all of these together in one place.

Suggest a site for inclusion in the Atlas, and help us identify all the places that make our state unique.

Thematic Tours

Where does your New Mexico story begin? On a road trip, of course. Will you follow dinosaur tracks or the footsteps of ancient peoples? Will you gaze up at the clear night skies, or revel in tales of the Old West? Tours organized around themes of art, history, culture, and scientific discovery will spark your imagination and give shape to your own New Mexico story.

What's Nearby

From the Faraway Nearby is the poetic title Georgia O’Keeffe gave to a painting in 1935, from a trip to New Mexico. In the painting a close up image of a sun bleached deer skull and antlers are juxtaposed with distant mountains against the vast New Mexico sky. As you travel from here to there, take time to experience the people and places of the faraway nearby.

Some Considerations

Sites in the Cultural Atlas must allow public access or be visible from a public place. They also must have a permanent location (though, in the case of events, may not be accessible at all times). Additionally, They must be recognized by at least one source—such as a registry, guidebook, or encyclopedia—as having cultural significance.
